Cat and dog love

To buy or not to buy?  We all love our pets, but is pet health insurance necessary?  Insurance plans offer different levels of coverage.  This may include general wellness, vaccinations, flea/tick and heartworm protection, accidents, and illnesses.    Some pre-existing conditions may not be covered and certain breeds require higher coverage due to hereditary health issues.  Animals over nine years of age may be denied coverage or require higher surcharges.

Pricing is based upon the level of coverage, your geographic area, breed, and age of the pet.  Billing is typically once per month with cats averaging $200 per year, and dogs $500 per year.  Owners must pay the veterinarian bill up front and then submit for reimbursement.   Policies have deductibles, co-pays, and caps, limiting how much will be paid out.

Owners should shop around as policies and premiums vary.  Check that the insurer is registered with your state.  Read all policies carefully and look for what is not included.  Due to technological advances in veterinary medicine,  more expensive tools and procedures are now available to pets.  Pet insurance can help to defray these costs.  However,  it may be better to set aside a certain amount of money into a pet emergency fund than to invest in pet insurance.

There are other ways to save money when it comes to the health of your pet.  Check your area for low cost clinics that offer shots.  Get a second opinion when expensive medical treatments are recommended.  Ask for free samples of medication from your vet and shop around for lower priced medications.  When it comes to pet food, cheaper is not always best.  Consult your veterinarian for recommendations.  Also remember to keep your pet at a healthy weight.

And what goes in, must come out.  Call DoodyCalls for all your pet waste removal services.  1.800.DoodyCalls.
